PATRIOTS TRADE RECEIVER BOUTTE TO TEXANS FOR SAFETY REED
The New England Patriots traded receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans on Monday, receiving safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick in return. The move came after the Patriots reshaped their receiver room during the offseason by trading for A.J. Brown in June and signing Romeo Doubs to a four-year deal in March. Head Coach Mike Vrabel stated that Boutte's departure resulted from roster depth considerations and his role within the team's structure.
Boutte had been one of Drake Maye's most productive downfield targets over the previous two seasons, but the additions of Brown and Doubs shifted the receiver hierarchy. With Brown and Doubs projected as the top two options, along with DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III occupying remaining spots, the roster configuration left limited opportunity for Boutte. Vrabel told reporters in Cleveland that the receiver had depth at the position and that the trade benefited all parties involved.
Vrabel identified special teams participation as a significant factor in the decision. He explained that Boutte did not contribute to special teams, which NFL teams typically require from players competing for inactive-day roster spots. Vrabel noted that without injuries, Boutte would likely have been inactive on game days, making the trade a practical solution for both the Patriots and the player seeking more consistent playing time.
