CRYSTAL PALACE DEFENDER RIAD OUT FOR SEASON WITH ACL RUPTURE

FRI 28 AUG 2026 FOOTBALL

Crystal Palace defender Chadi Riad has suffered another anterior cruciate ligament rupture, confirmed by medical scans, that is expected to sideline him for the remainder of the season. Riad was withdrawn from Palace's Premier League opener against Everton and subsequently underwent scanning that revealed the injury. The Morocco international now faces an extended absence from competitive football.

Riad has experienced repeated knee problems during his time at Palace since joining in summer 2024. He missed nearly four months with a knee injury between August and December 2024, then ruptured his ACL upon his return to fitness, an injury that kept him sidelined for 326 days until December of last year. Medical literature indicates that players who suffer ACL ruptures carry significantly elevated risk of rupturing the ligament in the opposite leg, though the occurrence of two ruptures in close succession remains uncommon. By the time Riad returns to full fitness, expected in summer 2027, he will have missed approximately two-and-a-half years to knee-related injuries during his Palace career.

Palace finished their opening fixture against Everton without victory, though the club generated sufficient chances to have secured a result. The injury represents a setback for Palace as they begin their campaign under manager Pierre Sage.
