GLACIER COLLAPSE IN TIBET TRIGGERS NEPAL FLASH FLOODS, 380 DEAD

FRI 28 AUG 2026

A glacier collapse in Tibet produced a magnitude 5.2 seismic signal and triggered flash floods across Nepal and Tibet that killed at least 380 people, according to reports. A section of glacier broke away at an altitude of 5,200 metres and fell 1,200 metres into the Lhende River, temporarily damming the waterway before releasing a large volume of water downstream. Water levels rose by nine metres in 30 minutes without rainfall in the affected areas. The floods destroyed at least 19 bridges and damaged 40 kilometres of roads across the region.

Approximately 1,500 people remain missing across Nepal and Tibet following the disaster. Among those unaccounted for are at least 33 British nationals, including a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy. Authorities in Nepal and China have issued warnings that a secondary flood could occur as debris continues to obstruct upstream rivers and threatens potential breaches of glacial lakes. Scientists are examining possible links between the incident and rapid melting of Himalayan glaciers attributed to climate change.

Experts have called for the development of early-warning systems to help mitigate the impact of future disasters in the region. Authorities and residents were caught off guard by the initial surge, as the water rose without preceding rainfall. Officials in both Nepal and China are monitoring the situation for further hazards.
