GERMANY IN TALKS TO HELP FUND BRITAIN'S TRIDENT NUCLEAR PROGRAMME

FRI 28 AUG 2026 CRIME

Germany is in discussions to help finance Britain's Trident nuclear deterrent programme as part of broader European defence efforts against potential Russian aggression, according to reports. Rather than developing its own nuclear arsenal, Germany plans to integrate into existing British and French nuclear frameworks. Germany may offer conventional military support or deploy Patriot air defence systems to key UK sites including Faslane. The diplomatic talks follow intelligence assessments suggesting Russia is evaluating an attack on a Nato member to test the alliance's resolve.

The proposals reflect heightened concern among European nations regarding potential Russian action and growing uncertainty about continued US military backing under Donald Trump, who has threatened to withdraw American troops from Europe. These discussions represent a shift in German defence policy, as the country has historically refrained from nuclear weapons development. The timing coincides with a recent visit to Moscow by CIA director John Ratcliffe. Germany's proposed involvement would mark a significant deepening of European nuclear co-operation during a period of heightened geopolitical tension.

The UK Ministry of Defence stated that Britain remains the only European ally to commit its nuclear deterrent to the defence of Nato, ensuring all members benefit from its protection. The ministry did not confirm or deny the discussions regarding German funding contributions. Officials emphasised Britain's existing role as a nuclear guarantor for the alliance. The outcome of the German-British talks remains unclear, with no timeline given for any formal agreement.
