TOTTENHAM MAINTAIN INTEREST IN FREIBURG STRIKER MATANOVIC

FRI 28 AUG 2026 FOOTBALL

Tottenham Hotspur remain in the running to sign Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic, according to reporting from Italian sources, despite completing the arrival of Omar Marmoush from Manchester City on an initial loan with a £60 million obligation to buy. Manager Roberto De Zerbi has also brought in Savinho for £85 million as part of an expanded attacking contingent. The club recorded a 3-0 defeat to Brentford in their season opener, prompting continued recruitment efforts.

Matanovic, a Croatian forward, scored 11 Bundesliga goals last season and has drawn comparisons to former Croatian international Mario Mandzukic. Multiple clubs have been linked with the player throughout the summer transfer window. Fiorentina have emerged as a rival bidder for Matanovic, though a move to the Italian club has been characterised as "difficult but not impossible" by reporting sources. Fiorentina are understood to be pursuing Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee, suggesting a potential pivot in their striker targets.

Manchester United are also monitoring Matanovic as Michael Carrick seeks a replacement forward. De Zerbi's squad now contains three centre-forwards following Marmoush's arrival, which may affect the futures of Richarlison and Dominic Solanke at the club. No concrete interest in either player has been reported publicly. The summer transfer window remains open for further business.
