STEELERS RESTRUCTURE METCALF CONTRACT FOR $18M CAP SPACE

FRI 28 AUG 2026 US SPORTS

The Pittsburgh Steelers have restructured the contract of wide receiver DK Metcalf, creating approximately $18 million in salary cap space for the 2026 season. The restructuring converted most of Metcalf's $25 million base salary into a signing bonus, according to reports from ESPN's Field Yates. The move does not alter the total compensation Metcalf receives this season.

The Steelers ranked last in the NFL in available salary cap space for 2026 prior to the restructuring. During the offseason, only the 51 highest-paid players on the 90-player roster count toward the salary cap; once the regular season begins, all players under contract count against it. The restructuring provides the franchise financial flexibility at a time when contract negotiations with cornerback Joey Porter Jr. remain unresolved. Head coach Mike Tomlinson recently described the talks with Porter as at an "impasse" as the fourth-year player seeks a contract extension whilst sidelined on the physically unable to perform list with a back injury.

The timing of the move has drawn speculation that the freed cap space could be deployed toward resolving the Porter negotiations. ESPN's Brooke Pryor noted the potential connection, stating that "$18m in cap space could help a team navigate past an 'impasse.'" The Steelers face their season opener against the Atlanta Falcons without a resolution to the Porter matter. The restructuring gives Pittsburgh the financial room it required to address multiple roster priorities simultaneously.
