JASON MCCOURTY SAYS 49ERS' CHAMPIONSHIP WINDOW HAS CLOSED
Former NFL defensive back Jason McCourty has stated that the San Francisco 49ers' opportunity to win the Super Bowl has passed. McCourty, now an ESPN analyst, made the assessment on First Take, saying the team has "got a lot older" and that their moment "has kind of passed". He expressed doubt about whether the 49ers would represent the NFC in the Super Bowl going forward, citing the age and injury status of key players on the roster.
McCourty identified several concerns underpinning his view. Wide receiver Mike Evans, acquired by the team, is on the wrong side of 30 and raises questions about long-term durability. Offensive lineman Trent Williams is 38 and recently suffered hamstring and ankle injuries in training camp. Tight end George Kittle, aged 32, is recovering from an Achilles tear, though he has been cleared to practice ahead of the season. Running back Christian McCaffrey has also reached an age that McCourty identified as problematic, and the team has dealt with numerous injuries throughout training camp.
The 49ers have reached the postseason in five of their seven seasons under head coach Kyle Shanahan. During that period, the team lost the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs twice. A divisional championship game loss to the Seattle Seahawks preceded McCourty's assessment of the franchise's immediate prospects.
