US OPEN DRAW PLACES DJOKOVIC AND ALCARAZ ON OPPOSITE BRACKET SIDES

FRI 28 AUG 2026 TENNIS

The draw for the US Open has been announced, with Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz positioned on opposite sides of the men's singles bracket. Djokovic will begin his campaign against Mariano Navone, an opponent he has not previously faced. The Serbian player's path to a potential 25th Grand Slam title could include matches against Matteo Berrettini or Stan Wawrinka in the second round. A potential final could pit Djokovic against Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Flavio Cobolli, Jakub Mensik or Rafael Jodar, among others.

Djokovic's possible route through the later stages of the tournament contains several challenging opponents. Should he progress to the fourth round, he could face Brandon Nakashima, Andrey Rublev or Daniel Merida. The quarterfinals could bring a matchup with either Frances Tiafoe or Daniil Medvedev. A semifinal meeting with Carlos Alcaraz, Arthur Fils, Ben Shelton or Jiri Lehecka is within the realm of possibility, given the bracket structure. Wawrinka, a former rival of Djokovic, is set to retire following the conclusion of this season.

Some observers expressed optimism regarding Djokovic's prospects in the tournament, contingent upon his physical condition remaining sound throughout the competition. The positioning of Alcaraz on the opposite side of the draw means the two players would meet only in the final, should both advance that far. The tournament structure presents Djokovic with a series of seeded and unseeded opponents at various stages.
