LIONS RUNNING BACK PACHECO SIDELINED BY BACK INJURY AHEAD OF SEASON OPENER

FRI 28 AUG 2026 US SPORTS

Detroit Lions running back Isiah Pacheco is dealing with a back injury that has cast doubt on his availability for the team's Week 1 opener against the Saints. Head coach Dan Campbell said on Thursday that Pacheco's status for the game remains unclear. Campbell stated that Pacheco was "feeling better as of yesterday" but acknowledged the injury has been "a little touch-and-go". Campbell confirmed that Pacheco's previously reported MCL sprain to his knee is "not a concern" regarding his availability.

Pacheco joined the Lions on a one-year deal worth $1.81 million in March, signed to serve as the backup to running back Jahmyr Gibbs. The move came after David Montgomery departed the club. Pacheco brings four years of experience from the Kansas City Chiefs, where he won two Super Bowl rings. In the 2024 season, Pacheco recorded 462 rushing yards and one touchdown across 13 games, adding 101 receiving yards and another score.

The Lions have begun exploring options at the position, meeting with free agent Kareem Hunt earlier this week. Such moves could indicate the team's concern about Pacheco's readiness for the start of the season. Campbell's cautious language regarding the running back's return suggests Detroit is preparing contingencies should Pacheco remain unavailable when the campaign begins.
