NASA'S ROMAN SPACE TELESCOPE SEALED IN ROCKET FAIRING AHEAD OF AUGUST LAUNCH

FRI 28 AUG 2026 SPACE

NASA has sealed the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope inside the protective fairing of a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket at Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on 21 August. The fairing, a shell 43 feet tall, will shield the observatory during transport and the initial stages of flight through Earth's atmosphere. Teams plan to move the encapsulated telescope to SpaceX's hangar at Launch Complex 39A, where it will be mounted on the Falcon Heavy rocket for final pre-launch preparations. NASA and SpaceX are targeting no earlier than 7:26 a.m. on 30 August for liftoff.

The fairing protects Roman from extreme conditions during launch, including intense sound vibrations, aerodynamic pressure and heating as the rocket accelerates through the atmosphere. Once the rocket has climbed to sufficient altitude, the two halves of the fairing will separate and fall away, leaving the telescope to continue its journey through space. SpaceX plans to recover both fairing halves after they return to Earth. The telescope will ultimately travel to Sun-Earth Lagrange point 2, a location approximately one million miles from Earth that provides a stable environment for astronomical observation.

The Roman Space Telescope was originally developed by the National Reconnaissance Office, a US intelligence agency, before being transferred to NASA in 2012 when it was no longer required for military missions. NASA has spent over a decade modifying the hardware for scientific purposes. The telescope is designed to survey approximately one billion galaxies and observe dark matter, supernovas and rogue planets to advance understanding of the universe's composition and expansion rate.
