FORMER AIR CANADA PILOT CHARGED OVER 900 FLIGHTS WITHOUT LICENCE
Canadian police have charged a former Air Canada pilot with fraud after he allegedly flew more than 900 domestic and international flights without the required licence over a period of 16 years. Geoffrey Wall, of Barrie, Ontario, is alleged to have operated as an airline captain between 2009 and 2025 without a valid airline transport pilot licence. Peel Regional Police say anomalies were detected during a documentation check. Transport Canada, the national aviation regulator, subsequently contacted police earlier this year.
Air Canada confirmed that Wall held a valid commercial pilot licence but was promoted to captain without obtaining the required airline transport pilot licence. The airline said it removed Wall from active duty upon discovery of the discrepancy and voluntarily reported the matter to Transport Canada. Wall is no longer employed by the airline, and Transport Canada has fined him for operating without the correct licence. Police also allege that Wall filed a false report to police concerning purportedly stolen pilot documentation.
Air Canada stated that an audit of its pilots found no other instances of non-compliance across the airline. The airline said safety was not compromised because all pilots undergo mandatory recurrent training every six months, including an annual flight check with a certified Transport Canada check-pilot. Air Canada nonetheless described appropriate licensing as an essential component of aviation safety. The airline declined to comment further, citing privacy law and the active criminal investigation.
