WYNDHAM CLARK WINS BMW CHAMPIONSHIP, DEFEATS RORY MCILROY

Wyndham Clark won the BMW Championship at Bellerive in St Louis, defeating Rory McIlroy by three shots. Clark held a five-shot lead heading into the final round but McIlroy closed the gap considerably during play. The decisive moment came at the par-5 17th hole, where Clark added a birdie whilst McIlroy made a bogey following what he described as a poor layup decision.

McIlroy entered the back nine with genuine momentum, erasing Clark's advantage through the early holes. At the par-3 16th, with both players on the green, Clark rolled in a 16-footer for birdie while McIlroy's attempt slid past the cup. McIlroy later characterised his earlier putts at holes 14, 15 and 16 as good strikes that simply did not drop. At the 17th, McIlroy's decision to lay up with a wedge from the rough proved costly; he pulled the shot into a bunker 113 yards from the green, then moved to another bunker before finishing with a bogey.

McIlroy viewed the tournament as progress despite the defeat, noting his game held together despite lingering swing concerns. He stated he remained uncomfortable with aspects of his technique ahead of East Lake, the next event on the postseason calendar. Clark's victory provided him the cushion needed to close out the championship down the stretch.
