ENGLAND ELIMINATED FROM HOCKEY WORLD CUP AFTER DRAW WITH NETHERLANDS

MON 24 AUG 2026

England's World Cup campaign ended after they drew 2-2 with the Netherlands in their final Pool E match. Zak Jones' side needed victory against the co-hosts to progress from the second pool stage to the semi-finals. Stuart Rushmere gave England an early lead after five minutes, but the Netherlands equalised through Jip Janssen and Thierry Brinkman. Henry Croft levelled the match early in the fourth quarter, and England could not secure a winning goal in Amstelveen.

England captain Zach Wallace said the result was difficult to accept. "We gave it everything and we put in a performance we can be proud of. In the end it wasn't to be," he stated. Wallace added that some decisions and individual moments had gone against the team at crucial moments. The Netherlands finished top of Pool E and advanced to the semi-finals alongside Argentina, with England finishing third and India fourth.

Germany and Spain complete the semi-final line-up. England will play Australia in the fifth-place match at the same venue on Friday at 14:00 BST. The fixture will determine final tournament placement for the two eliminated teams.
