ENES KANTER FREEDOM REMOVED FROM WNBA GAME AFTER EXCHANGE WITH NATASHA CLOUD
Enes Kanter Freedom, a former NBA player, was removed from an Indiana Fever–Chicago Sky game on Sunday following a heated exchange with Sky guard Natasha Cloud. According to Freedom's account, the altercation began after he raised his hands to celebrate a three-pointer made by Fever player Sophie Cunningham. Cloud subsequently approached Freedom and made a remark about Cunningham, which Freedom characterised as questioning his intentions. The confrontation escalated when Cloud walked towards Freedom during the third quarter after scoring a basket, with both parties exchanging words before Cloud was restrained by teammates and Freedom was removed by security.
Freedom stated that he attended the game to support women's sports and defend women, a claim he reiterated when speaking to media. He said Cloud used profanity and "heavy language" during their second altercation. Cloud has not publicly responded to Freedom's account of their exchange or the remarks he attributed to her. Freedom's courtside presence appeared designed to draw attention to what he characterises as unclear eligibility criteria in the WNBA's 2026 Collective Bargaining Agreement, which specifies that only women may participate but does not address questions of gender identity or transgender athletes.
Freedom announced via social media his intention to declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft in order to challenge the league's eligibility process. His attendance at Sunday's game marked his first appearance at a WNBA event. The incident highlights ongoing debate within professional sports regarding participation rules and eligibility standards.
