ASTON VILLA CONCEDE FOUR GOALS IN FIRST HALF AT BRIGHTON
Aston Villa conceded four goals in the opening 31 minutes of their match against Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, resulting in a 4-0 defeat. The heavy loss marked a tumultuous start to the season for Unai Emery's side, who travelled to the south coast without a centre-forward after Ollie Watkins was left out of the squad. The fixture came following the departures of several high-profile players during the transfer window, including Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa and Youri Tielemans.
The afternoon deteriorated further when summer signing Joao Gomes was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Brighton player Georginio Rutter after 40 minutes. The £38 million midfielder, signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers, had been caught in possession moments earlier when Brighton scored their fourth goal, before appearing to lose composure and commit the foul. Gomes has more than 100 Premier League appearances to his name and is 25 years old. Emery consoled the player as he left the pitch.
The defeat leaves Aston Villa facing Arsenal's visit to Villa Park in their next fixture. Emery has built a reputation for man management during his time at the club and retains supporter patience following previous success in the Midlands, though the scale of the loss presents significant challenges to address as the season progresses.
