JALON DANIELS LEADS BUCCANEERS PAST CHIEFS IN PRESEASON
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 16-15 on 22 August in a preseason match. Buccaneers rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels took over from Jake Browning before the fourth quarter and orchestrated an offensive strategy designed to draw the Chiefs' defence into a penalty. Daniels described his approach in a post-game interview, stating he intentionally attempted to provoke an offsides infraction on a third-down play.
The Buccaneers had committed two false starts in the first half and faced further pressure when the Chiefs held a five-point lead entering the fourth quarter. With Tampa Bay at third-and-one, Chiefs defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah was flagged for a neutral zone infraction, advancing the Buccaneers five yards. Daniels then executed three consecutive plays that set up the Buccaneers' special teams unit for a field goal. Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles praised Daniels' performance, stating that he "did a good job closing out the game second week in a row" and made "some clutch plays", whilst acknowledging there remained "a lot of things he's got to learn".
Daniels was among 15 rookie quarterbacks who appeared in preseason Week 2 matches. According to reported assessments of the rookie quarterbacks' performances, Daniels drew positive marks, whilst other debut players received lower grades.
