BRENTFORD BEATS TOTTENHAM 3-0 IN DE ZERBI'S OPENING MATCH

SUN 23 AUG 2026 FOOTBALL

Brentford defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium in Roberto De Zerbi's opening match as Tottenham manager. Keane Lewis-Potter, Vitaly Janelt and Michael Kayode scored the goals for Brentford. Tottenham offered little attacking threat and conceded repeatedly to Brentford's pressing. Igor Thiago missed a penalty for Brentford during the match.

Mamadou Sangaré featured prominently in Brentford's midfield after joining from Lens for £39m. Sangaré created the opening goal with a one-two involving Thiago, then pulled the ball back for Lewis-Potter to score in the 12th minute. Brentford operated under Keith Andrews in their second season under his management. Tottenham made significant summer signings including Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for £100m and Mateus Fernandes for £85m, with Fernandes appearing as a substitute in his debut.

The result marked a difficult start to De Zerbi's tenure with Tottenham, who broke their transfer record in the summer but failed to establish patterns of play or effective defensive organisation against Brentford's intensity. One report noted that Brentford should have scored more than three goals. The match was Tottenham's opening fixture of the season following their summer spending, which sources indicate may exceed £300m in total outlay.
