CLARKE SECURES IPSWICH PREMIER LEAGUE WIN AGAINST SUNDERLAND
Jack Clarke scored in the 90th minute to give newly-promoted Ipswich Town a 2-1 victory over Sunderland in their opening-day Premier League fixture. Clarke converted after Omar Alderete's wayward pass on the stroke of full time, curling the ball into the bottom corner. The result marked Ipswich's second Premier League home win in 24 years, according to one account.
Emersonn opened the scoring in the 24th minute following a move involving Julio Enciso, who intercepted a pass from Luke O'Nien before dribbling past Dan Ballard and squaring for Emersonn to finish. Nilson Angulo equalised for Sunderland in the 39th minute with a free kick that sailed over the wall and in via the crossbar. Enciso had earlier gone close when he lifted over the crossbar after being teed up by Emersonn. Gary O'Neil took charge of Ipswich for a competitive fixture for the first time since replacing Kieran McKenna in June, with six full debutants featuring in the squad. Ipswich made 12 summer signings as part of their preparation for top-flight football.
The victory came in Sunderland's return to the Premier League following their own promotion. Both teams finished with competitive debuts; Sunderland had finished seventh in the 2025-26 campaign according to one report. Ipswich had invested significantly over the summer window, with sources indicating spending exceeded £150m, including a club record £24m plus add-ons for Emersonn and £26m for Enciso.
