IRAN'S PRESIDENT CALLS FOR END TO US WAR WHILE IN "POSITION OF STRENGTH"

SAT 22 AUG 2026 NORTH AMERICA

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on Friday for an end to the months-long war with the United States, stating that Tehran holds a position of strength as diplomatic talks remain stalled. Speaking in a meeting with doctors, Pezeshkian said: "It is better that we bring the war to an end now as we are in a position of power and dignity." He added that "the whole world acknowledges our victory" and accused America of attacking Iranian schools, hospitals and infrastructure in violation of international regulations. Pezeshkian's comments came days after a June memorandum of understanding between the two countries expired.

The conflict began in February following US and Israeli military action. According to reports, the war has reached a stalemate, with diplomatic negotiations on hold between the two sides. Tehran continues to maintain a partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping waterway, whilst Washington maintains a naval counter-blockade of Iran. Pezeshkian defended the June agreement against criticism from hardline opponents in Iran's parliament, who had accused his administration of making concessions to the United States. He stated that the agreement contained no clause indicating capitulation from Tehran.

However, Iran's military leadership adopted a contrasting posture. Major-General Ali Abdollahi, chief of staff of Iran's armed forces, stated that the country remained prepared to respond to new threats with "crushing, punishing and devastating responses" across military and cyber domains. Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of Oman and Iran discussed on Friday ways to create conditions for resuming dialogue and negotiations, signalling ongoing diplomatic efforts despite the public military statements.
