NIKLAS SULE RETURNS TO FOOTBALL WITH NINTH-TIER GERMAN SIDE

FRI 21 AUG 2026 FOOTBALL

Niklas Sule, a former Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund defender, has made his playing comeback with SV Tiefenbach, a ninth-tier German side, three months after announcing his retirement. Sule, who won the Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2020, marked his debut by scoring a goal. However, SV Tiefenbach lost the match 7-2 to SG Kirchardt in the opening weekend of their district league.

Sule retired from professional football in May following a third serious knee injury, having previously ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament twice during his career. The 30-year-old German international played as a midfielder rather than his traditional centre-back position during his debut. His return to the sport comes at a significantly lower level than the Bundesliga and European competition where he spent his previous career.

Sule's move to SV Tiefenbach represents a marked change from his time at elite clubs. The defender's decision to return to football after three months away suggests he remains motivated by the sport itself rather than financial considerations. His debut goal indicates he retains technical ability despite his extended absence from professional competition.
