CAVALIERS ACQUIRE PEYTON WATSON IN FOUR-TEAM TRADE

THU 20 AUG 2026 US SPORTS

The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired wing Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets in a four-team trade involving the Los Angeles Clippers and Washington Wizards. Watson will sign a four-year contract worth $88 million with a player option and trade kicker, according to ESPN insider Shams Charania. The Cavaliers traded veteran guard Max Strus to the Clippers to create salary cap flexibility under the NBA's luxury tax apron rules.

To complete the transaction, Denver received an unprotected 2031 first-round pick and a 2032 second-round pick via Sacramento from Cleveland. The Cavaliers also sent guard Tre Mann, a 2027 second-round pick, and cash to Washington in exchange for forward Cam Whitmore. The Wizards then sent forward Julian Reese to Denver, where he was subsequently waived from his two-way deal. Watson, aged 23, averaged 14.6 points and shot 41.1 per cent from three-point range in the season prior to the trade.

Cleveland pursued Watson to bolster its roster alongside Donovan Mitchell and James Harden. The Cavaliers shed Strus's $16.6 million salary whilst taking back Whitmore's $5.4 million contract to remain under the first apron. Denver elected to accumulate future draft capital rather than commit additional luxury tax spending to retain Watson.
