SCHEFFLER BACKS LIV GOLFERS' RETURN TO PGA TOUR WITH CONDITIONS
Scottie Scheffler, World No. 1, stated that the PGA Tour should allow players who defected to LIV Golf to return, though he said penalties should apply to those who left. Speaking at a press conference in St. Louis, Missouri, Scheffler said LIV Golf contains "a few players that are really good" but that the PGA Tour's depth remains superior. He added that some LIV players "would provide a lot of value to the Tour" and that he welcomed competing against them more frequently.
LIV Golf launched in 2022 with backing from Saudi Arabia, attracting major names including Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Cameron Smith with multi-million-dollar contracts. The PGA Tour initially imposed indefinite suspensions on players who joined LIV, then restructured its schedule with lucrative Signature Events and secured $3 billion in investment to retain top talent. According to reports, LIV Golf has reduced its purse and cancelled its season-ending tournament, signalling financial constraints that may prompt some players to reconsider their positions.
Scheffler did not specify what form penalties should take, leaving that decision to PGA Tour leadership including Brian Rolapp. Other prominent PGA Tour players have taken differing positions on LIV returnees: reports indicate Rory McIlroy has questioned whether LIV players add value to the Tour. Brooks Koepka has been cited as an example of a LIV golfer who successfully returned to compete on the American tour.
