NNEKA OGWUMIKE ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM WNBA AT END OF 2026 SEASON

WED 19 AUG 2026

Nneka Ogwumike announced on Wednesday that she will retire from the WNBA at the end of the 2026 season, bringing her 15-year career to a close. The 11-time All-Star made the announcement during an exclusive interview with Taylor Rooks for the Boardroom Talks podcast. Ogwumike, drafted first overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2012, said she had reached a point of gratitude and fulfilment. "I find myself grateful, fulfilled, and at peace with everything this game has given me and everything I've poured into it," she stated.

Ogwumike's career includes significant individual and collective achievements. She won WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2012, league MVP and a championship in 2016, and earned eight All-WNBA selections and seven All-Defensive Team selections. She spent 13 of her 15 seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks and holds franchise records in scoring, field goals made, steals and double-doubles. One report identified her as the fourth all-time WNBA scorer with 7,879 points, third in rebounds with 3,565 and seventh in steals with 707. Since 2016, she has served as President of the Women's National Basketball Players Association, a role in which she shaped collective bargaining agreements in 2020 and 2026.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert released a statement recognising Ogwumike's influence both on and off the court. "Nneka will retire at the end of this season leaving the WNBA much better than she found it," Engelbert said. Engelbert added that the league's recent growth cannot be discussed without acknowledging Ogwumike's contributions as a player and leader. Ogwumike's final regular-season game is scheduled for 24 September against the Golden State Valkyries, after the Los Angeles Sparks were eliminated from playoff contention.
