BELFAST STABBING PROMPTS CALLS FOR CALM AMID PROTEST FEARS

A knife attack in north Belfast late on Monday night has prompted politicians and police to call for calm following widespread circulation of footage on social media. The attack took place at approximately 10:30pm outside a block of flats in north Belfast. Video shared online showed a man straddling another person on the ground and striking at his head and neck. Bystanders intervened to stop the assault, with one man, locally identified as Maitiu Mag Tighearnan, striking the attacker multiple times with a hurling stick. The suspect, believed to be a Sudanese asylum seeker in his 30s, was taken into custody and remained there as of Tuesday evening. The victim, a man in his 40s who has not been named, was in a serious condition in hospital with injuries to his eyes and slash wounds to his back and face.

The footage spread rapidly online, drawing responses from figures including Elon Musk and Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, who shared the video and called for protests in central London and elsewhere in the United Kingdom. Social media posts from accounts in Northern Ireland announced road closures for a protest and advised businesses to close by 5:30pm in anticipation of disorder. Sudanese business owners on Sandy Row, a loyalist area of central Belfast, shuttered their premises with steel shutters by 4pm and said they intended to remain at home that evening. The Belfast Islamic Centre cancelled its evening prayers following police advice that the following 24 hours would be critical.

Politicians from across the political spectrum condemned the attack and called for restraint. Police had initially stated the suspect was believed to be Somali before revising that assessment to Sudanese. The spread of the footage and subsequent calls for protests raised concerns about wider disorder across Northern Ireland and beyond. Authorities continued to monitor the situation as the suspect remained in police custody.
