ESPN CUTS SHORT TRIBUTE TO FOUNDER BILL RASMUSSEN

TUE 18 AUG 2026 FOOTBALL

Bill Rasmussen, founder of ESPN, died on Tuesday at the age of 93 after battling Parkinson's disease for more than a decade. ESPN attempted to pay tribute to Rasmussen and his legacy during the First Take segment on Tuesday. However, the tribute was abruptly cut short when The Pat McAfee Show began, according to reports. During the segment, journalist Courtney Cronin announced Rasmussen's death to viewers.

Rasmussen created ESPN after becoming frustrated by the constraints of covering sports on local television. Working as a local sports anchor in Massachusetts, he had only three minutes to deliver scores and highlights, with coverage largely limited to teams including the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins. ESPN launched on 7 September 1979, with SportsCenter as its first broadcast. Nearly five decades after going live, the network had become one of the largest names in sports media and a major television home for the National Football League.

The abrupt ending of the tribute generated backlash from viewers. Reports indicate that the tribute was rushed, with each panelist given only brief moments to share their thoughts about Rasmussen's contribution to sports broadcasting. ESPN did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the circumstances of the truncated segment.
