CHIEFS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR RETURNS AFTER WIFE'S RECOVERY FROM SHOOTING

TUE 18 AUG 2026 US SPORTS

Eric Bieniemy, offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, returned to the team last week after a period away during which his wife Mia recovered from being shot in late July. Bieniemy spoke to reporters for the first time since his return on Tuesday. He thanked the press for respecting his family's privacy following the shooting. Bieniemy's son was arrested in connection with the incident. Bieniemy said his wife's recovery was the primary reason for his decision to return to work.

Mia Bieniemy sustained gunshot wounds to her arm and chest at the couple's home. According to Bieniemy, his wife is on a road to recovery and doing well enough to give him permission to resume his coaching duties. Bieniemy described his wife as "a soldier" and "a saint", stating it had been difficult for family members to have him remain at home during her recuperation. He remained involved with the Chiefs remotely during his absence, maintaining contact with the team's practice sessions and players.

Bieniemy said his continued communication with the Chiefs whilst away from the facility had allowed him to stay connected to the coaching staff and players. He noted that his remote participation had involved colourful language that surprised family members but was familiar to Chiefs players. Bieniemy expressed that it felt good to be back with the team in person.
