RICKY GERVAIS SAYS HE WILL MARRY JANE FALLON TO AVOID INHERITANCE TAX

TUE 18 AUG 2026

Ricky Gervais has stated he will marry his longtime partner Jane Fallon to avoid paying inheritance tax. The comedian, speaking to Saga magazine, said tax avoidance would be the reason for marriage after four decades together. Gervais and Fallon, both 65, have been in a relationship since 1982 but have not previously married. According to one report, their combined fortune is estimated at £142 million.

Gervais noted that the couple already share all their money and have lived together for 40 years, questioning why marriage had not occurred sooner. He described the prospect of needing to marry before death as "horrible" and "mad", given the stability of their long-term relationship. Earlier this year, Fallon revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer following a routine mammogram and underwent two surgeries, which she said "went well". Gervais stated he has no plans to retire, citing his father's work on a building site until the age of 70.

During the interview, Gervais also discussed cancel culture, stating he believed the phenomenon had "peaked" and was cyclic across generations. He expressed support for choice on the issue of assisted dying but said it would require significant suffering for him personally to consider such a decision. Gervais's latest television series, Alley Cats, was released on 7 August.
