PRINCESS EUGENIE NAMES DAUGHTER ADELAIDE ELIZABETH ANNINA
Princess Eugenie has announced the name of her third child, a daughter born on 3 August at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. The infant has been named Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Eugenie, who is married to Jack Brooksbank, revealed the name on Instagram on Monday, stating it was chosen in tribute to "three people we love and admire past and present". The baby weighed 6lb 9oz at birth, according to Buckingham Palace.
Eugenie explained that Adelaide is named after her late great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, "who we hold close in our hearts". The name also reflects English and Portuguese history, "two places we love and call home". Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen was Queen of the United Kingdom and of Hanover from 1830 to 1837 as the wife of King William IV. The inspiration for the middle name Annina has not been publicly confirmed, though one report states it is believed to be a personal connection to Eugenie and Jack whose nature has not been made public. Eugenie's other children are August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, born in 2021, and Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, born in 2023.
Adelaide is 15th in line to the throne and is not a Royal Highness. Her birth moved her great-uncle Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, to 16th place in the line of succession. She is the 15th great-grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth and the fifth grandchild of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and his former wife Sarah Ferguson. Eugenie and her family divide their time between Portugal and Ivy Cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace.
