STUDY LINKS SELF LOCATION BELIEFS TO PERSONALITY

WED 03 JUN 2026 MEDICINE

Researchers have found that people hold distinct beliefs about where in their bodies their sense of self is located, and these beliefs correlate with measurable personality traits. Participants in the study were asked to identify the physical location they associate with their own identity or consciousness. Responses varied significantly, with common locations including the head, chest, and heart. The findings suggest that the perceived seat of the self is not a universal constant across individuals.

People who placed their sense of self in the head region tended to show stronger associations with analytical and rational thinking styles. Those who identified the chest or heart area as the location of their self reported stronger connections to emotional experience and social identity. The study used established psychological measures to cross-reference location responses against personality profiles. Researchers collected data across a broad sample to identify these patterns.

The research contributes to a growing body of science examining how bodily self-perception relates to psychological identity. Scientists have long studied the concept of the "self" as a cognitive and neurological construct, and this work adds a physical dimension to that inquiry. The results indicate that where a person believes their self resides may reflect deeper differences in how they process experience and relate to others. The study has been published and is available for review by the wider scientific community.
