SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT CONFIRMS £1M COALSNAUGHTON SUPPORT PACKAGE

TUE 09 JUN 2026

The Scottish Government has confirmed a £1 million funding package to support residents evacuated from Coalsnaughton, a former mining village in Clackmannanshire. Close to 100 properties across four streets have been evacuated following reports of ground movement and unsafe structures. First Minister John Swinney announced the funding after visiting the area last week. The money will be directed to Clackmannanshire Council to cover costs incurred during the emergency response, including temporary housing, welfare provision and staffing.

Evacuations began when 60 properties in Benbuck View and Dunmoss View were cleared, followed by a further 28 properties in Nechtan Drive and nine in Langour on 29 May. Affected residents have been told they cannot return home for at least another eight weeks while an investigation is carried out. Some residents have been staying with family members, while others have been placed in hotels or temporary accommodation, some of which residents have described as substandard. Swinney confirmed that Scottish Government ministers are pressing the UK Government to ensure the Mining Remediation Authority expedites its investigation.

Clackmannanshire Council Leader Ellen Forson welcomed the funding, describing the situation as unprecedented and confirming the council's focus remains on the people and families affected. Forson stated the council would continue working with all partners to keep residents supported and informed throughout the process. The funding covers expenses already incurred by the council rather than representing a separate relief grant. No date has been confirmed for when residents may be permitted to return to their homes.
