TRUMP ORDERS PENTAGON TO SCALE BACK KOREA EXERCISES AS DRILLS BEGIN

MON 17 AUG 2026 NORTH AMERICA

South Korea's defence ministry confirmed on Monday that joint military exercises with the United States had commenced despite President Donald Trump's announcement that the Pentagon should reduce their scale. The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield drill is scheduled to run for eleven days through 27 August, involving approximately 18,000 South Korean military personnel. Trump stated on Truth Social hours before the exercises began that he was "not happy" with US participation in the operation. He said the drills were costly and sent a signal that was "totally inappropriate and hostile" to North Korea.

Trump cited his assessment that North Korea had been "unthreatening and respectful" during his presidency, and highlighted what he described as his "very good relationship" with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The President has previously sought to end or curtail military exercises with South Korea whilst disputing Seoul's share of costs for stationing 28,500 US troops on the peninsula. North Korea reacted sharply to the announcement of the exercises, as it has done annually. Trump additionally stated that he had recently requested South Korea's participation in US efforts to denuclearise Iran, but received a negative response from Seoul.

The timing of Trump's criticism raises questions about the future trajectory of US military commitments to South Korea. The exercises proceed despite the President's stated objections, indicating that the Pentagon and South Korea's defence ministry proceeded with the planned operation. The eleven-day drill represents a point of ongoing tension between Trump's stated preference for reducing military activities in the region and the established security arrangements between Washington and Seoul.
