KATE DOUGLASS BREAKS 50M FREESTYLE WORLD RECORD TWICE IN ONE DAY

MON 17 AUG 2026 OLYMPICS

Kate Douglass set the 50-metre freestyle world record twice within nine hours at the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships. In the morning heats, Douglass swam 23.49 seconds, breaking the previous record of 23.55 seconds held by her training partner Gretchen Walsh. In the evening final, Douglass lowered her own mark to 23.19 seconds. This marked the third time Douglass has broken the long-course 50m freestyle world record in her career.

Douglass had not competed in the 50m freestyle at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials and did not expect to dominate the event. Her previous personal best was 23.91 seconds, a time she shared with Walsh. Douglass first set the world record in Indianapolis with 23.59 seconds, breaking Sarah Sjöström's previous mark of 23.61 seconds. Walsh reclaimed the record nine days later with 23.55 seconds in Rome. Douglass described the morning swim as beyond what she had planned, saying she had expected only to break the 24-second barrier.

Walsh finished second in the evening final with 23.74 seconds, whilst Australia's Meg Harris took bronze in 23.89 seconds. The rivalry between Douglass and Walsh has intensified as training partners who previously held the record between them. Douglass now holds the world record by a substantial margin over her nearest competitor.
