UKRAINE LAUNCHES MAJOR DRONE ATTACK ON RUSSIAN TERRITORY
Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks of the war overnight, striking targets across Russia including a major distribution warehouse near Moscow, according to reports from Russian and Ukrainian authorities. At least six people were killed in the strikes, with one death reported in Moscow region. A fire broke out at a Wildberries logistics facility near Podolsk, approximately 25 miles south of Moscow's city centre, which Ukraine's military said was disabled as a result of the attack.
Russian defence ministry officials claimed to have intercepted 1,478 Ukrainian drones in the past 24 hours, described as the highest total ever claimed by Moscow. However, this figure could not be verified and experts cautioned that Russian interception claims required careful scrutiny. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that 600 drones targeted the Moscow region specifically, of which 201 were destroyed. Serhii Kuzan, chair of the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Centre, stated that Russian authorities "deliberately inflate their figures" to overstate air defence effectiveness. Kuzan noted that "against the backdrop of increased production of Ukrainian long-range drones and missiles, both the number of strikes and the scale of Ukrainian weaponry's deployment are on the rise". Russian sources reported that the defence ministry's claimed interception figure exceeded a record set only the previous day.
The attack demonstrated the rapid expansion of Ukraine's long-range strike capabilities in 2026. Ukraine also reported that Russian forces bombed 13 locations inside the country overnight, killing seven Ukrainians. Kuzan said the Moscow region strike was "quite possible" the largest-scale attack there to date, and was "at least on a par" with May strikes on an oil refinery in the Kapotnya area near Moscow.
