FALCONS LIST TAGOVAILOA AS STARTER, PENIX SIDELINED AS INJURED
The Atlanta Falcons have listed Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback on the official depth chart, with Cooper Rush as backup and Jack Strand in the third position. Michael Penix Jr. does not appear on the active depth chart and is instead listed as an "injured player," according to reporting on the Falcons' quarterback situation. Penix is practising but has not yet participated in 11-on-11 drills following an ACL injury sustained last year. The situation means Tagovailoa could secure the starting position by default ahead of Week 1 if Penix remains unavailable.
The Falcons' coaching staff—head coach Kevin Stefanski, general manager Ian Cunningham and president of football Matt Ryan—were not in place when the organisation used the eighth overall pick to select Penix. This means the current regime has no existing attachment to Penix and may be willing to move forward with whichever quarterback performs best. Tagovailoa is currently the healthiest option available to the franchise. If Tagovailoa performs well once the season begins, it could prove difficult for Penix to regain playing time.
The timeline for Penix's return to full participation remains unclear. Should Tagovailoa establish himself as the starter through strong early-season performance, the quarterback competition that appeared to exist from an external perspective may not materialise internally. Penix will need to demonstrate readiness to participate in team drills to have a realistic chance at reclaiming the starting role.
