JERSEY SWIMMER NOWACKI DELAYS A-LEVEL RESULTS DURING EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Filip Nowacki, an 18-year-old swimmer from Jersey, has postponed opening his A-level examination results whilst competing at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris. Nowacki won gold in the men's 200m breaststroke final on Thursday, finishing in two minutes 7.70 seconds ahead of Dutch competitor Caspar Corbeau. He told reporters he chose to delay discovering his results to maintain focus during the competition. Nowacki is scheduled to compete in the 50m breaststroke on Friday morning.
Nowacki completed A-levels in economics, mathematics and physics at Millfield School in Somerset. Last month, he became Jersey's first Commonwealth Games medallist in 36 years by winning gold in the 200m breaststroke in Glasgow and silver in the 100m event. In the latter race, he finished ahead of Olympic champion Adam Ramsay-Peaty, who won bronze. At the European Championships earlier this week, both swimmers competed in the 100m breaststroke, with Ramsay-Peaty placing fifth and Nowacki sixth, neither securing a medal.
Nowacki plans to study at Loughborough University from September as part of their Swimming Performance Centre. He began swimming in Jersey at age four and has maintained eight training sessions per week throughout his examination period with support from his school. He stated that if his A-level results did not meet his expectations, his recent medal-winning performances would help offset any disappointment.
