US INFLATION DATA STEADIES GLOBAL MARKETS AFTER THURSDAY RALLY

FRI 14 AUG 2026 ECONOMY

Asian stock markets recorded mixed results on Friday following a report showing improved inflation figures in the United States. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.3% to 68,533.85, while South Korea's Kospi advanced 1.3% to 6,924.74. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1%, Shanghai's Composite dropped 0.5%, and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 declined 1.1%, with Taiwan and India also recording losses.

U.S. wholesale prices were 4.7% higher in July than a year earlier, according to reported data — an improvement from June's 5.5% rate and slightly better than economist expectations. On Thursday, the S&P 500 closed at an all-time high of 7,798.99, rising 0.7%, whilst the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1% and the Nasdaq composite climbed 0.8%. Oil prices eased, with Brent crude falling 2.1% and trading near $87.06 per barrel. Market analysts attributed the gains to reduced expectations of imminent Federal Reserve interest rate increases, which could support economic conditions and borrowing costs.

The inflation data has reinforced market expectations that the Federal Reserve will refrain from raising interest rates in the near term, according to market commentary. Any increase would mark the first in more than three years. Oil prices have fluctuated considerably in recent weeks, trading between $72 and $102 per barrel amid uncertainty regarding potential negotiations affecting Middle Eastern supply routes. A summer trading lull has slowed activity, though concerns over oil supplies persist.
