AMY HUNT WINS 200 METRES GOLD AT EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN BIRMINGHAM

FRI 14 AUG 2026

Amy Hunt won the women's 200 metres final at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, crossing the line in 22.19 seconds. Rhasidat Adeleke of Ireland took silver in a national record time of 22.28 seconds, whilst Hunt's fellow British athlete Dina Asher-Smith finished third in 22.29 seconds. Success Eduan, another British competitor, placed sixth in 22.66 seconds. Hunt's victory represents her second gold medal of the championships, following an earlier win in the 100 metres.

Hunt said after the race that she was halfway towards achieving a target of four golds at a single European championships. The introduction of a mixed 4×100 metres relay at these championships has created the possibility for Hunt to become the first British athlete to win four golds at a single European event. Hunt also plans to compete in the women's 4×100 metres relay. The Cambridge English literature graduate described the 200 metres as "the hardest physically", citing health difficulties including low blood pressure that caused near-fainting episodes after races earlier in the year.

The evening session at Alexander Stadium attracted 20,082 spectators, the best-attended session of the championships so far. This marked the fourth successive evening of British gold in Birmingham. The attendance came despite a 90-minute closure of the M6 northbound motorway near Birmingham caused by smoke from fires across the West Midlands, which resulted in 150-minute delays and caused some athletes to arrive late.
