JAYDEN DANIELS SENDS LEGAL NOTICE TO LSU OVER JERSEY NUMBER
Jayden Daniels, quarterback for the Washington Commanders, sent a legal notice to LSU on 5 August instructing the university to cease using his name, image and likeness. The action followed LSU's decision to assign Daniels' former number, 5, to cornerback DJ Pickett. Daniels' camp stated that the family felt "profoundly disrespected" by the university's choice. According to a statement from Daniels' spokesperson, the quarterback and his family believed the number would remain protected as part of his LSU legacy.
Daniels wore number 5 during his time at LSU, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 2023, becoming the third player in the university's history to receive the award after Joe Burrow and Billy Cannon. Pickett, who wore number 3 previously, was promised number 5 during his recruitment in 2024 and wore the number during his secondary school career. Number 5 had not been worn by any LSU player since Daniels' final season. By contrast, Joe Burrow's number 9 jersey remains unassigned at LSU.
Former NFL tackle Geoff Schwartz criticised Daniels' decision to send the legal notice, describing it as a mistake on social media. Former Heisman winner Robert Griffin III, who also played for the Washington Commanders, characterised the action as a "colossal mistake" by Daniels. If enforced, the legal notice could require LSU to cease promoting Daniels' achievements and imagery associated with his Heisman-winning season.
