REAL MADRID WIN SIXTH UEFA SUPER CUP WITH VICTORY OVER ATALANTA
Real Madrid claimed their sixth UEFA Super Cup title in August 2024, defeating Atalanta 2-0 in the 49th edition of the competition. The victory extends Real Madrid's record as the most successful club in the tournament's history. The UEFA Super Cup pits the winners of the Champions League against the Europa League champions and is recognised across European football as a significant trophy rather than a secondary fixture.
The competition was established in 1972 by Dutch journalist Anton Witkamp. The first unofficial Super Cup took place that year when Ajax played Rangers, though Rangers were subsequently banned from UEFA competition following crowd trouble. The inaugural sanctioned edition followed, with Ajax defeating AC Milan 7-1 across two legs. For its first 25 years, the Super Cup was contested in a two-legged format during winter months, allowing both teams to play at home. The format changed to a single match held at the start of the football season. Since the competition's founding, 25 clubs have won the trophy.
Referee Omar Artan took charge of the 2024 Super Cup match. Artan had been denied participation in the FIFA World Cup, but received recognition for his performance in the Super Cup from former goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who described his officiating in positive terms.
