COVENTRY RETURN TO PREMIER LEAGUE AFTER 25 YEARS

THU 13 AUG 2026 FOOTBALL

Coventry City will begin their first Premier League season in 25 years when they face Arsenal in the opening fixture on Friday, 21 August. The club won the Championship last season under manager Frank Lampard, ending a quarter-century absence from the top division. Coventry were relegated from the Premier League in 2001 and subsequently endured nine years in the fourth tier, as well as periods away from their home stadium between 2013 and 2021.

Only seven players in Coventry's squad possess Premier League experience, with midfielder Gus Hamer holding the most appearances at 34 from his time at Sheffield United. The club has completed significant recruitment this summer, with Caleb Yirenkyi arriving from Danish side FC Nordsjælland for a club-record fee of £23 million. Lampard acknowledged the gap between Championship and top-flight football, stating that whilst excitement and hunger within the squad were positive elements, bridging that divide would require focused work.

Coventry's restoration to the Premier League marks the culmination of a difficult period for the club and its supporters. The journey included nine seasons in the fourth tier and a temporary relocation to Northampton for the 2013-14 campaign, followed by shared use of Birmingham's St Andrew's stadium from 2019 to 2021. Many supporters have pledged to hold signs reading "We are back" at matches, echoing a message first displayed by supporter John Mullaney in 2001 when relegation was confirmed.
