XAVI HERNÁNDEZ APPOINTED NETHERLANDS HEAD COACH UNTIL 2030
Xavi Hernández has been appointed head coach of the Netherlands on a four-year contract running through the 2030 World Cup. The 46-year-old Spanish former Barcelona manager replaces Ronald Koeman, who departed following the Netherlands' last-32 elimination by Morocco at this summer's World Cup. Xavi's deal marks his first managerial position since leaving Barcelona in 2024. The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed the appointment.
Xavi won the World Cup as a player with Spain in 2010 and claimed two European Championships in 2008 and 2012. He managed Barcelona from November 2021, securing the La Liga title in 2023 before his departure last year. At Barcelona he made 767 appearances as a player across his career. In his KNVB statement, Xavi cited his connection to Dutch football through the influence of Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, stating he felt "a tremendous honour" to take the role and describing himself as "a bit of a son of Dutch football."
Arne Slot, who manages in club football, withdrew from consideration for the position after an initial approach. Slot told media outlets he preferred to work at club level, saying he wished to be on the training pitch with players daily in ways that national team management does not permit. Xavi's managerial philosophy, he stated, emphasises attacking football based on possession alongside creativity and winning outcomes.
