EMEKA EGBUKA SUFFERS TOE INJURY IN BUCCANEERS JOINT PRACTICE
Emeka Egbuka limped off the field during a joint practice between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Centre in Florham Park, New Jersey on Wednesday. The wide receiver was injured during an end-around play when he was rolled up on by a teammate. According to reports, Egbuka stayed down briefly before getting up and walking off the field under his own power to the sideline.
Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reported that Egbuka suffered a toe injury considered minor. The injury occurred during the second day of the two-day joint training camp session. Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles did not provide an update on Egbuka's status immediately after the practice. A medical expert commenting on the incident expressed concern about the injury mechanism, noting that such incidents in wide receiver play can sometimes result in high ankle sprains, though the specific nature of Egbuka's injury remained unclear at the time.
Egbuka recorded 63 catches for 938 yards and six touchdowns during his rookie season. The Buccaneers will face the Jets in their preseason opener, though most team starters are expected to sit out that game. The timing allows Egbuka a substantial period to rest before the team returns to practice. The injury follows the trade of Mike Evans to San Francisco, which had been expected to increase Egbuka's offensive responsibilities with Tampa Bay.
