RYBAKINA DEFLECTS QUESTION ON SABALENKA RANKING CHALLENGE

WED 12 AUG 2026 W TENNIS

Elena Rybakina deflected questions about her pursuit of the World No. 1 ranking during an interview at the Canadian Open after her quarterfinal victory. Speaking to interviewer Mark Petchey, Rybakina stated that she focuses on individual matches rather than rankings. She said: "Only when you ask, I have to think about it." Rybakina added that she prefers to "go match by match and hopefully win titles" rather than monitor her position on the WTA Rankings.

Rybakina currently stands second in the WTA Rankings, 8,670 points behind World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. According to reports, a Canadian Open title would bring Rybakina to 8,666 points, leaving a gap of just four points between the two players. Sabalenka was eliminated from the Toronto tournament in the fourth round. Rybakina previously reached a career-high ranking of No. 2 after reaching the Indian Wells semifinals in March. She won the Australian Open in 2026.

Rybakina will defend semifinal points at the Cincinnati tournament, which will affect her ranking trajectory regardless of her performance in Toronto. The narrowing gap between the two players has generated repeated interview questions about Rybakina's World No. 1 ambitions. Rybakina's remarks suggest she wishes to avoid focusing on ranking speculation during tournament play.
