SEMI-PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER JAILED FOR DANGEROUS DRIVING AT 191MPH
Connor Charlton, a centre forward for Nostell Miners Welfare FC, has been sentenced to four years in jail following convictions for dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice. The 32-year-old from Hunslet was sentenced on Wednesday at Leeds Crown Court and banned from driving for four years and seven months. He admitted 10 counts of dangerous driving and four offences of perverting the course of justice. Footage recorded by a passenger showed Charlton driving his BMW at 191mph on a motorway, whilst other video captured him drifting the vehicle at a roundabout and narrowly avoiding a van.
Charlton played for Nostell Miners Welfare FC in the Northern Counties East League. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, he was also involved in a scheme in which other drivers accepted penalty points for speeding offences committed by Charlton in exchange for cash payments. The motorway footage and roundabout incident provided direct evidence of the dangerous driving conduct that formed the basis of the charges.
The sentencing concludes legal proceedings that began following the circulation of the driving footage. Charlton's four-year driving ban extends beyond his custodial sentence, meaning he remains prohibited from driving for a further seven months after his release from jail. The case was prosecuted by the Crown Prosecution Service following investigation into both the filmed driving incidents and the points-transfer scheme.
