HOUSEHOLDS NEAR NEW PYLONS TO RECEIVE £250 ANNUAL ENERGY BILL DISCOUNT

WED 12 AUG 2026

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has outlined 43 initial projects under a scheme offering energy bill discounts to households near new grid infrastructure. Residents living within 500 metres of new or upgraded overhead transmission lines could save up to £2,500 on their electricity bills over a 10-year period, equivalent to £250 per year. Most eligible households will automatically receive the discount on their electricity bills every six months, with payments beginning in the first half of next year. The scheme applies to approved overground transmission projects where main construction work began on or after 10 March 2025. Energy Minister Michael Shanks stated that the initiative ensures local communities hosting essential national infrastructure receive a direct financial benefit.

Grid companies are expected to spend up to £77bn over five years to build the new networks and power lines needed to carry renewable electricity from offshore and remote generation sites to urban areas with high demand. The government confirmed this discount scheme after ruling out proposals to run the new cables underground. According to research commissioned by the department, building pylons "remains the most cost-effective way of upgrading Britain's outdated electricity networks" and would provide "the best value for bill-payers". The projects represent one of the biggest grid upgrade drives since the 1960s, affecting over 40 locations across Great Britain. Mr Shanks described the multibillion-pound upgrades as "a vital part of how we deliver secure, homegrown energy and unlock economic growth across the country".

The scheme aims to prevent community opposition to increased pylon and substation construction as the country transitions away from fossil fuels. The eligible households can expect to receive their energy bill discounts automatically via their energy supplier. Mr Shanks stated that communities hosting the infrastructure "should benefit", framing the discount as recognition of the role local residents play in supporting national energy infrastructure.
