MEL GIEDROYC MISSED MOTHER'S DEATH AFTER NIGHT OUT

WED 12 AUG 2026

Mel Giedroyc has described missing her mother's death in 2024 as one of the biggest failures of her life. Giedroyc, a comedian and former host of The Great British Bake Off, was performing in the musical Starter for 10 at Bristol's Old Vic whilst her mother Rosemary was ill. After a Saturday night performance, friends convinced her to remain at the theatre for drinks despite her concerns about her mother's health.

Giedroyc consumed four Bacardi and Diet Cokes that evening and described her behaviour as "immature and ridiculous". She returned to her flat and fell asleep without charging her mobile phone, an action she characterised as out of character after two months of consistent charging. The following morning, when she switched on her phone, she received multiple messages from her family informing her that her mother had died during the night.

Speaking on the How To Fail podcast hosted by Elizabeth Day, Giedroyc recalled visiting her mother on the Friday before the fatal Saturday, when she had said goodbye after her evening performance. She had intended to return to see her mother on the Sunday. Giedroyc's account of the events has been shared as part of the podcast's format, in which guests discuss moments of significant personal regret.
