INDIANA COACH CIGNETTI CRITICISED FOR WEAK NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

WED 12 AUG 2026 FOOTBALL

College football analysts have criticised Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti and the university's front office for scheduling what they characterise as a weak non-conference slate. Brandon Walker, a Barstool Sports insider, stated on The Brandon Walker Show that Indiana has deliberately avoided elite opponents outside conference play despite winning the national championship. Walker said the Hoosiers would advance to the playoff again because their schedule contains fewer than two potential losses.

Indiana's September 2026 schedule features North Texas, Howard and Western Kentucky, with no Power Four programmes in the non-conference portion. ESPN's Football Power Index ranks Indiana's overall strength of schedule at No. 33 nationally, near the bottom among top Big Ten programmes. The university paid a $500,000 buyout to terminate a series with Virginia and scrapped a planned home-and-home series against Notre Dame for 2030–2031. The last time Indiana faced a marquee out-of-conference opponent in the regular season was September 2023, when they lost to Louisville.

Walker rejected the argument that non-conference schedules are locked in years in advance, stating that Indiana had made a conscious choice to remove elite opponents from future calendars. Curt Cignetti explained the genesis of Indiana's programme transformation in a CBS 60 Minutes interview, though details of his comments were not provided in available reporting. The scheduling decisions come following Indiana's national championship victory in the previous season.
