US MILITARY FIRES ON SHIP ATTEMPTING TO BREACH IRAN BLOCKADE

TUE 11 AUG 2026 NORTH AMERICA

A US Navy helicopter fired on and disabled a Panama-flagged cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman on Tuesday after its crew ignored repeated warnings from American forces, according to US Central Command. The aircraft fired missiles into the engine room of the M/V Vela Nova, rendering it unable to proceed to Iranian ports. CENTCOM stated on social media that the ship "is no longer transiting to Iran in violation of the US blockade". No casualties have been reported so far.

The United States reinstated a blockade of Iranian ports on 14 July as part of an ongoing military conflict with Iran. CENTCOM said it had redirected 55 ships attempting to run the blockade and boarded two others as of Tuesday. The firing on the M/V Vela Nova marked the third instance in which the United States forcibly halted a vessel since the blockade began. The UK Maritime Trade Operations reported an incident in the Gulf of Oman involving "a container ship and military forces" but provided no additional detail at the time.

The incident occurred as the Trump administration considered its approach to pressuring Iran. The administration stated it was evaluating whether to allow economic pressures to weaken Iran's position, according to official sources. The blockade and enforcement operations represent an escalation of tensions in the Gulf region, a major shipping corridor through which significant volumes of global trade pass.
