GOOGLE GEMINI REACHES 1 BILLION MONTHLY USERS

TUE 11 AUG 2026 AI

Google's Gemini app has reached 1 billion monthly active users, making it the company's 14th product to hit that milestone. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the achievement on X, describing Gemini as Google's fastest-growing product. The announcement follows OpenAI's disclosure that ChatGPT crossed 1 billion monthly users in June, though OpenAI did not formally announce the figure until 6 August.

Growth trajectories for the two platforms differ according to reported data. OpenAI stated that ChatGPT had 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, reaching 1 billion monthly users five months later. Google reported that Gemini had 750 million monthly users in February, rising to 950 million in late July before reaching 1 billion last week. An OpenAI spokesperson said ChatGPT hit 1 billion weekly users in July, though the company declined to disclose its current monthly user count. The reported figures measure different user metrics — weekly versus monthly — making direct comparison difficult.

Gemini's user count refers specifically to the dedicated Gemini app and does not include usage across Google's other products where the service has been integrated. Anthropic's Claude app is also reported to be growing, though the company does not publicly disclose user figures; external estimates place Claude's users in the tens of millions. Both ChatGPT and Gemini's user growth represents significant expansion for generative AI tools in mainstream use.
