NFL ALLOWS HEAD COACHES TO DELEGATE CHALLENGE FLAG DUTY

TUE 11 AUG 2026 US SPORTS

The National Football League has introduced a rule change permitting head coaches to designate another person to throw the challenge flag during matches. Zac Taylor, head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, disclosed that his team had been operating under this arrangement for eight years prior to the rule change being formally adopted. The modification expands flexibility in how teams manage in-game challenges and officiating disputes.

The challenge flag system allows coaches to contest officiating decisions on the field. Previously, the rule required head coaches to throw the flag themselves when disputing calls. The new regulation permits coaches to assign this responsibility to another member of their coaching staff or support team, streamlining the process during fast-paced play. Taylor's disclosure suggests the practice had been undertaken informally by some teams before receiving official sanction.

The rule change takes effect ahead of the upcoming NFL season. The modification represents an adjustment to operational procedures rather than a substantive alteration to the challenge system itself. The change accommodates practical preferences that had already emerged among some coaching staff, formalising an approach that teams including the Bengals had already adopted.
